Buying and Displaying Old Masters in Early Nineteenth-Century England

The Regency was a period of crucial importance in the history of collecting Old Master paintings in England. As the owners of aristocratic collections in France and Italy were forced by the political upheavals to part with their inherited possessions, Old Masters arrived on the London art market in unprecedented quantity and quality. The book presents seven case studies of notable Regency collectors – the 4th Earl Darnley, the 2nd Earl Grosvenor, Amabel de Grey, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, Philip John Miles, Samuel Rogers, and the 5th Earl Cowper - tracing how their collections were formed, and analysing the taste that guided them. Also discussed are how these new owners created and displayed their acquisitions.

Painter, architect and sculptor, Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527–1596) was one of the most whimsical interpreters of Michelangelo's manner, of which he returned a fantastic and lively reading that fascinated some of the most important clients of the European sixteenth century. Five unpublished Roman paintings by the artist are exceptionally found and presented to the public in this volume for the first time. Removed in the nineteenth century from their original location and mounted on canvas, they depict a selection of episodes from the cyclops saga Polyphemus. The publication is an important addition to the artist's catalog that adds fundamental piece for the knowledge of the Capitoline painting of the Farnesian era.

Bonifacio de' Pitati

This is the first major study of the prolific Venetian Renaissance painter Bonifacio de' Pitati (aka Bonifacio Veronese) (1487-1553) for almost a century. A contemporary and rival of Titian, Bonifacio represented a progressive and influential force in the painting of the lagoon in the middle decades of the sixteenth century. The first half of the book comprises a series of essays covering the chronological development of Bonifacio's career within the wider context of Venetian Renaissance painting by Philip Cottrell. This foreshadows a detailed catalogue raisonné of over two-hundred of Bonifacio's paintings by Peter Humfrey, including recent discoveries, discussed and illustrated for the first time.

Tintoretto's portraits of Giovanni Grimani

An unprecedented and refined dialogue between some portraits of the patriarch Giovanni Grimani, collector of antiquities and patron of important artists of the sixteenth century, is the protagonist of the small but precious catalogue Tintoretto and Giovanni Grimani. Published on the occasion of the exhibition curated at Palazzo Grimani for 2024 Venice Art Biennale, the catalogue allows to update the iconographic and iconological reading of these paintings from an historical-artistic point of view.

Some of the greatest portraits of Western art were painted in Florence during the tumultuous years from 1512 to 1570, when the city was transformed from a republic with elected officials into a duchy ruled by the Medici family. This publication, a beautifully presented short history of the Grand Tour in Venice, examines La Serenissima's central role in the Grand Tour, tracing how the city shaped artistic taste, collecting practices, and cultural exchange among European elites. Essays draw on archival sources, artworks, and travel accounts to reconstruct Venice's place within international networks of art and patronage. Fascinating extracts from the letters of visitors such as Lord Byron to Dickens are complemented, at the end of the book, with blank pages left for the modern visitor.

David Bowie's Tintoretto: Angel Foretelling the Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria

The Colnaghi Foundation presented a scholarly publication on David Bowie's Tintoretto. The book includes contributions by Dr Stijn Alsteens, Matt Collings, Dr Christina Currie, Nicholas Hall, Dr Jeremy Howard, Dr Riccardo Lattuada, Maja Neerman, John Julius Norwich, Dr Xavier Salomon, Serge Simonart and Ben van Beneden. It focuses not only on Tintoretto and 15th-century Venice, but also on the turbulent history of the little church on St Mark's Square, Maerten de Vos, Rubens, Van Dyck and Bowie as a collector.
